Tikal isn't just a cluster of pyramids poking out of the Guatemalan jungle — it's a 1,500-year political thriller with a suspicious royal death, a six-year-old queen, and a still-unresolved argument over whether a foreign empire staged a coup. Corrections & Clarifications Did the king really die "the very next day" after the stranger arrived? In the episode, we say Chak Tok Ich'aak I ("Great Jaguar Paw") died the day after Siyaj K'ak' ("Born From Fire") arrived from the west. Yet it seems we misunderstood some of the information in the sources, as many point to this being the same day, not the next one. Same-day timing is actually the strongest evidence for reading this as a targeted coup rather than a natural death followed by a peaceful handover. Was Yax Nuun Ahiin really from Tikal? The story we told (a young king backed by distant power) is correct — yet we were a bit too certain about his origin from Tikal. Most sources point to him being the son of a Lord, possibly the king, from Teotihuacan, so he may have actually been born in Teotihuacan. Is it still cash-only at the gate, like we said? Actually, Guatemala's Ministry of Culture and Sports has shifted Tikal's ticketing toward an online, card-based system at boletos.culturaguate.gob.gt as the primary way to buy entry.
