Flying Over Niagara Falls at 4,000 Feet

On the last morning of our Toronto weekend, I asked air traffic control for something I wasn't sure they'd approve: permission to circle Niagara Falls. Billy Bishop tower couldn't authorize it — that call belonged to the next controller down the line. So we took off, pointed south, and asked again. The answer came back on the first try. What followed was two laps over Niagara Falls at 4,000 feet in our Cessna Centurion 210 — the Horseshoe on one side, the American Falls on the other, and mist climbing half a mile into the sky. Then west across Lake Erie to Detroit, the one airport in Michigan with customs officers on duty on a Sunday, where an officer walked right out to our airplane on the ramp and checked five passports at the wing.
