Chopin: Waltz in A minor, Op. posth. (B. 150) | Romantic Dance

Chopin died in 1849. This waltz was not published until 1955. It is one of the strangest gaps in the repertoire. He wrote it sometime in the 1840s, and the exact year is still argued over. The Chopin National Edition puts it around 1847 to 1849. Other scholars push it back as far as 1843. Nobody can settle it, because the piece did not travel the normal route from composer to publisher to public. It simply sat. The autograph resurfaced after the Second World War, and in 1955 it was finally printed in a special edition of La Revue Musicale and attributed to Chopin. That is more than a hundred years between the writing and the publishing. Whole generations of pianists lived and died without ever knowing it existed. What makes that harder to explain is the piece itself. It is not a fragment or a sketch or an off day. It is complete, it is beautiful, and it has since become one of the first pieces of real Chopin that many pianists ever learn. There is also something quietly odd about it as a waltz. A waltz is dance music. This one is in A minor, and it does not sound like a room full of people. It sounds like one person, remembering a room full of people. The dance is still there in the rhythm, but the mood has turned inward, which is a thing Chopin did better than almost anyone. Catalogued as B. 150 and KK IVb/11. Published as Op. posth., the label Chopin never chose and never saw. Recorded and produced by Tranquil Streams.
