THE FIRST LEPCHA WOMAN TO SUMMIT MOUNT EVEREST | GNerSONGMIT LEPCHA | THE TASHI SHOW On 21 May 2026, a historic chapter was written for the Lepcha community and the people of Sikkim. From Men Rongong in Mangan, North Sikkim, Gnersongmit Lepcha stood on the summit of Mount Everest — 8,848.86 metres above sea level — becoming the first Lepcha woman to successfully summit the world’s highest mountain. But behind that historic photograph from the summit lies a story of determination, discipline, sacrifice and an extraordinary journey from the mountains of Sikkim to the top of the world. Gnersongmit was part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Women’s Mount Everest Expedition 2026. The expedition achieved a remarkable 100% summit success, with all 14 Indian members reaching the summit. (Everest Chronicle) A graduate of Sikkim University with a Master’s degree in Lepcha, Gnersongmit joined the ITBP in 2022 before being selected for this prestigious expedition. (Sikkim Express) In this special episode of THE TASHI SHOW, we sit down with Gnersongmit to go beyond the achievement and explore the person behind the summit. We talk about: 🏔️ Her journey from Men Rongong, Mangan, to Mount Everest 🧗‍♀️ What it takes to prepare for an Everest expedition ❄️ The physical and mental challenges of climbing at extreme altitude 🇮🇳 Her experience as part of the ITBP Women’s Everest Expedition 🌏 What it means to become the first Lepcha woman on Everest 🫶 Her family, upbringing and the people who supported her journey 🌿 Her connection with Lepcha identity, culture and Sikkim 🔥 Fear, determination, setbacks and moments of doubt 🏔️ What it felt like to finally stand on the summit 👧 Her message to the next generation of young people from Sikkim This is more than a story about climbing a mountain.
