This Bridge Has a Chilling Legend Behind It.
This centuries-old stone bridge in Epirus carries one of Greece's most haunting folk legends.
Located just outside Arta, in northwestern Greece, the bridge crosses the Arachthos River. While it was originally built in Roman times, the structure you see today dates back to the Ottoman period, around 1602-06 (some sources say 1613). From 1881 to 1912, its highest point actually marked the border between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Greece.
But the bridge is most famous for its folk legend: according to tradition, its foundations kept collapsing every night during construction, until the master builder was told to sacrifice his own wife into the stones for the bridge to finally stand. As she was being walled in alive, she is said to have cursed — then blessed — all those who would one day cross it. It's one of the most well-known ballads in Greek folklore, with echoes in similar "immurement" legends across the Balkans.
