Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, went more than a century without street addresses. In September 2026 it finally gave in, and the reason reveals what really happened to one of America’s most famous small towns.
Carmel began as a bohemian colony of poets, painters and storybook cottages, then became a magnet for tourists, movie stars and millionaires. Clint Eastwood served as mayor, and a pope came to visit. Today about 60% of its homes sit empty on any given night, the median resident is nearly 70, and in 2026 the town even tried to cut its own tourism funding.
So why does it feel like nobody wants to visit Carmel anymore? This documentary traces the rise, the peak and the slow hollowing-out of a California coastal icon.
