Come diving with me in Sydney to look for one of our cutest local sharks...the Port Jackson shark! 🦈
Every winter, Port Jackson sharks aggregate along the NSW coast to breed, which makes this an amazing time of year to find them around Sydney. So today we're jumping in at one of my favourite local dive sites to see who we can find.
Then, after the dive, I'm sharing 5 of my favourite facts about these little sharks, from their individual personalities and shark friendships to huge migrations, corkscrew-shaped eggs and their bizarre built-in "nutcracker" teeth.
If you love sharks, marine science and coming along for slightly nerdy ocean adventures, subscribe and come diving with me 💙
🔬 WANT TO NERD OUT? HERE'S SOME OF THE SCIENCE:
🦈 Port Jackson shark personalities
Research has found consistent individual differences in Port Jackson shark behaviour, including boldness and responses to unfamiliar environments.
🦈 Shark friendships & social behaviour
Adult Port Jackson sharks form non-random social associations and can preferentially associate with particular individuals across breeding seasons.

Juvenile social behaviour:

🦈 Migration, site fidelity & breeding aggregations
Port Jackson sharks can migrate hundreds of kilometres and show strong fidelity to particular breeding reefs, returning to familiar areas across multiple breeding seasons.

🦈 Corkscrew eggs, teeth, diet & general biology
Port Jackson sharks lay distinctive spiral egg cases that females wedge into rocky crevices. They also have pointed front teeth for grasping prey and broad crushing teeth farther back for animals like molluscs, crustaceans and sea urchins.
