Northern Mockingbird

The northern mockingbird is a grayish colored songbird that grows to about 10 1/2 in in length. Both the male and female look alike. They live in Florida year round. Their diet is mostly bugs in the warmer months and they like to hang out in open areas searching for insects so you'll see them perching on power lines and diving down into a lawn, or roadway, to grab an insect ... especially in the spring when they are feeding babies. In the cooler months, when there are less insects, they rely on berries from native plants such as pokeweed, swamp dogwood and beautyberry. Many other natives provide berries in the winter like various viburnums and hollies. Mockingbirds may be a drab gray but their lackluster appearance is made up for by their beautiful voices. Their songs are so beautiful and melodic. Please visit my site to learn more about native plants and animals at https://sharonsflorida.com/.
