I've made two sleep sounds over the last couple of years that approached comfort in quite different ways. One was inspired by the emotional comfort of a hug, and the other by the physical comfort of a weighted blanket. I thought it was about time I combined them. Oxytocin Blanket takes the warmth and softness of my original Oxytocin Noise and blends it with the deeper, heavier frequencies I developed for Weighted Blanket for the Mind. I've always found weighted blankets particularly comforting, especially during the colder months. I use one myself, and there's something reassuring about that consistent pressure when you're settling down for the night. Oxytocin is interesting for a different reason. It's a hormone involved in bonding, childbirth and social connection, and is often associated with feelings of closeness and trust. I remember learning quite a bit about it when my wife was giving birth to our children. Apparently, one of my more useful jobs was keeping her comfortable, making her laugh and providing plenty of cuddles! Of course, playing a sound doesn't mean your brain will suddenly release oxytocin. But I liked the idea of taking the qualities we associate with that feeling of closeness and combining them with the acoustic weight of my other sound. So I've used two elements. OXYTOCIN EMBRACE Warm pink noise, softened waves and slow, low-frequency pulses evoke the comfort and closeness associated with oxytocin, creating a reassuring backdrop for winding down. I've taken the softer textures from my original Oxytocin Noise, including filtered fabric recordings, gentle water sounds and low-frequency tones. The pink noise provides a warm, continuous background, while the slower pulses add a little movement without becoming too prominent. WEIGHTED RESONANCE Sustained bass and overlapping low harmonics build a dense, enveloping sound field, softening background disturbances and creating a comforting sense of weight. This is where the Weighted Blanket sound comes in. I layered sustained low frequencies and overlapping harmonics to give the sound more depth and density. Unlike the gentle pulses in the first element, these lower layers remain relatively constant, providing a stable foundation throughout the night. The main challenge was keeping the softness of Oxytocin Noise without losing the weight of the bass. Too much low-frequency energy and the whole thing becomes rather oppressive. Too much movement and it stops feeling like the steady, comforting sound I was trying to make. I spent time adjusting the balance between the two, softening the sharper frequencies and blending the layers until the sound felt full without being overwhelming. There's also a practical benefit to that continuous sound field. By reducing some of the contrast between the background and sudden environmental noises, it may help make certain disturbances less noticeable during sleep. I'm not claiming this sound can reproduce the hormonal effects of a hug or the physical pressure of an actual weighted blanket. But I do think sound can have a wonderfully comforting quality, particularly when the frequencies are warm, consistent and carefully balanced. And that's what I've tried to capture here. The softness of one sound, the weight of another, and hopefully something particularly comforting when the two come together. If you enjoy sleeping under a weighted blanket, or just like a deep, warm sound that surrounds you without demanding your attention, give Oxytocin Blanket a try tonight. Sleep long and sleep well, my friends. MADE USING: Fabric scratching with a Tangle Teezer, rice shaking, filtered pink noise, wave and underwater field recordings, low-frequency MIDI tones, underwater tambourine pulses, sustained sub-bass resonance and overlapping harmonic layers.
