Rolls-Royce's UltraFan 30 pairs a 90-inch fan with a gearbox that hit 64 megawatts on a test rig. The shocking part is the engine core hidden behind that fan. Rolls-Royce is betting that a ducted turbofan can still match the open-fan rival, with a target of 20% better fuel efficiency. This video covers the geared design, including the bypass ratio and why a bigger fan and smaller core save fuel. It covers the Power Gearbox record of 64 MW (about 87,000 horsepower) against the 50 MW the UltraFan 80 demonstrator needs. It also covers half-year results showing underlying operating profit up 46% to £2.5 billion, and what the Derby demonstrator's teardown and second build do and do not tell us. It then looks at the evidence that has already flown: the carbon composite fan blades, the ALECSys lean-burn combustor and the borrowed Pearl 10X core. It sets this against CFM's RISE open fan, backed by Airbus. The UltraFan 30 ground demonstrator is planned for the second half of 2028, and the video separates what is proven from what is still only a target.
