Beyond the Scoreboard: What Young Athletes Taught Me About Humanity

What makes a team truly strong? Is it the victories, the records, and the scoreboard? Or is it something much deeper? A couple of weeks ago, I joined the Rock Springs High School cross-country team for their memorial run up Wilkins Peak in Wyoming. What began as one of the most physically challenging runs of my life became one of the most meaningful experiences I've shared with these incredible young athletes. At the top of that mountain, I witnessed something that moved me deeply. Young athletes speaking openly about mental health, vulnerability, supporting one another, and the importance of knowing that none of us has to face life's challenges alone. But what stayed with me wasn't simply what they shared. It was the space that had been created for them to share it. In this Sunday Reflection, I explore what these young humans taught me about trust, belonging, leadership, and the relationships that hold us together when life gets difficult. I usually keep these reflections under 10 minutes, but some experiences deserve a little more space. I hope you'll give these 16 minutes a chance. And as you watch, I invite you to reflect on one question: What kind of space are you creating for the people in your life? A special thank you to the Rock Springs High School cross-country athletes and their coaches for continuing to teach me so much about our shared humanity. 🎬 New videos feature stories, journeys, and conversations from around the world. 🔔 Subscribe and turn on notifications to follow along. #HumansAmongUsStudios #CharlesPaajoe #HumanStories #Storytelling #Documentary #TravelStories #Interviews #PeopleAndPlaces #VisualStorytelling ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- © 2026 Humans Among Us.
