Join me for a real Shanghai apartment tour inside my family's 1980s Communist-era workers' housing, and spend a day with four generations of our Chinese family. I'm CY, a lifelong Shanghai local. Today, we're visiting my husband's grandma, who still lives in an old working-class neighborhood in Shanghai. Her apartment was originally a 30-square-meter dorm-style home, allocated to her husband by a state-owned company under China's old socialist housing system. Over the decades, it was transformed into a tiny 50-square-meter loft with two bathrooms! And before moving here, they lived in a room of just 10 square meters, without a private kitchen or bathroom. But this video is about more than just an old apartment. You'll also see our family preparing a traditional Chinese lunch, four generations gathering around the table, a family remembrance ceremony, and my daughter learning Shanghainese nursery rhymes from her grandma. And there's a personal reason I wanted to film this home. At 82, Great-grandma is getting ready to move closer to her family, leaving behind the neighborhood she's called home for decades.
