OUTER BANKS ROAD BROKE TWICE THIS FALL! Now a $160 MILLION BRIDGE Is Pitched for Pea Island North Carolina Highway 12, the only road onto Hatteras Island, broke twice this fall at the same spot on Pea Island: a nor'easter damaged about 1,000 feet on September 24, and another closed it from October 19 until a one lane reopening on October 29. On November 2, a consultant for Dare County laid out bridges for the island's weakest spots, including a permanent bridge about three miles long across northern Pea Island at about 160 million dollars, and a one cent sales tax to help pay for them; commissioners approved nothing, and state public meetings on the road's future are listed for November 17 and 18. In this video, we ask what it would take to stop rebuilding the Outer Banks highway the ocean keeps breaking, from the September and October nor'easters on Pea Island and the ten days the island was cut off to the emergency ferry, the governor's emergency order, the one lane reopening, the millions already spent on patches, the plan to move the road west, the bridges on the table and their price tags, the sales tax idea, the island's history of storms from 2019 to Hurricane Erin, the federal money and study, and the public meetings coming up. EWN (Extreme Weather Network) covers floods, hurricanes and other extreme weather around the world as it develops, with real footage and verified facts from official sources and trusted news outlets.
