For the second time in less than a month, the Atlantic Ocean tore apart North Carolina Highway 12 at Pea Island on the Outer Banks, the only road onto Hatteras Island. A September 24, 2026 nor'easter broke about 1,000 feet of pavement near the Pea Island Visitor Center; on October 19 the dunes failed again at the same spot and about 1,200 feet of road was damaged. Hatteras Island was cut off by road for about 10 days, visitors were ordered out, and the emergency Rodanthe–Stumpy Point ferry carried 1,451 vehicles and 2,416 passengers by October 25 (NCDOT). A temporary one-lane detour reopened on October 29.
In this video: where NC 12 sits on a ribbon of sand, the September washout, the October 19 breach, how overwash and king tides tear up a road, ten days on the emergency ferry, the same spot failing three times in two years, the repair plan and one-lane reopening, the houses standing in the surf in Rodanthe, the FEMA-funded buyout of three threatened homes, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Jug Handle Bridge, plans to move the road west, and the tides ahead.
As of the latest updates at the time of recording, NC 12 at Pea Island is still a one-lane detour. Follow Dare County and NCDOT for official updates, never drive through water on NC 12, and stay away from damaged oceanfront homes and beach debris.
