Germany ordered 23 Bergepanzer 3 A2 Büffel armoured recovery vehicles from Rheinmetall in June 2026, buying back the Leopard 2 recovery capability it had already given away to Ukraine.
The Bundestag budget committee cleared the purchase on 10 June 2026, and Rheinmetall announced the contract on 23 June, describing the value only as the mid three-digit million-euro range. German defence press puts the package at roughly 360 million euros including initial spares. The money does not come from the core defence budget. It was drawn from the budget line funding Germany's Ukraine support initiative, so Berlin is paying for these vehicles out of the same pot that created the shortfall.
The arithmetic is blunt. Germany handed Ukraine 21 Bergepanzer 2 and 2 Bergepanzer 3 Büffel, the two Büffel crossing in March 2023 alongside the 18 Leopard 2A6 it donated. This order replaces them one for one. Rheinmetall states openly that the measure is not intended to develop new capabilities but to ensure long-term readiness. The Büffel fleet returns to 96 vehicles and stops there.
This video covers what the Bergepanzer 3 A2 actually changes, starting with the figure that rewrote the requirement. The old 30-tonne crane was sized for the Leopard 2 of the 1990s and no longer suffices for the heavier turrets of the Leopard 2A7 and Leopard 2A8. The A2 answers with a 32-tonne crane, digitised electronics, cleared obsolescence and add-on armour, built on a Leopard 2 hull Rheinmetall developed itself because the rights to the standard hull sit with its competitor KNDS.
It also covers the schedule and who paid for it. First delivery is due in December 2027, 18 months after signature, and the last in June 2029. Rheinmetall reached that date only by pre-financing the work and starting production before any contract existed.
And it covers the fight nobody settled. In June 2025 the manufacturer FFG protested to parliament that the award was going through without competition, offering 23 Wisent 2 recovery vehicles instead. Budget politicians noted the Büffel award, then demanded open competition for the roughly 100 Bergepanzer 2 still earmarked for retirement. That contest decides whether Germany's recovery fleet keeps pace with a Leopard 2 fleet heading toward 430 tanks.
