Since 2016, the UK has had seven Prime Ministers. Each promised to fix the same economic problems. None did. So why is the UK economy so hard to fix? Britain isn’t poor, young or short of institutions, and economists broadly agree on the diagnosis: weak investment, stalled productivity since the 2008 crisis, a finance-heavy economy concentrated in London, and the added drag of Brexit. The hard part isn’t knowing what’s wrong. It’s paying to fix it. We look at why wages have barely grown in 15 years, why the gap between London and the rest of the country is so wide, and what Liz Truss’s 2022 mini-budget revealed about how little room any government has to act. Every route out means raising taxes, borrowing more or cutting spending. Each has a price. So which one is Britain willing to pay, and is any government trusted enough to ask?
