The Olympics. The FIFA World Cup. A stronger NBA Finals. Continued growth in streaming and digital media.
On paper, 2026 should have the ingredients for a strong advertising year. The numbers tell a different story.
Guideline data shows the advertising market grew roughly 4% year over year during the first half of 2026. In comparable years featuring major global sporting events, historical growth has been closer to 10%.
So what is holding the market back?
In this episode of Media Monitor, Kelly Sweeney and Sean Wright break down the data behind the first half of 2026 and examine where advertising dollars are gaining momentum—and where spending is weakening.
Sean explains why major tentpole events are masking softer underlying growth, why automakers continue to pull back, and how AI and SaaS companies are helping drive software advertising.
They also discuss one of the biggest structural changes in media buying: the continued migration from linear television toward CTV and streaming. World Cup advertising offers a striking example. Guideline’s preliminary data suggests roughly 25% of World Cup dollars were booked on streaming this year, compared with approximately 5% during earlier tournaments discussed in the episode.
The conversation then turns to the second half of 2026. Softer consumer spending, inflationary pressure and broader economic conditions could continue weighing on advertising, even with U.S. midterm election spending ahead.
Finally, Kelly and Sean examine one of advertising’s newest channels: AI search. Advertisers are testing it, spending is growing, and the technology is moving quickly—but brands still appear to be figuring out how consumers respond.
