Building a Home Inside a River Cave | Start to Finish

This is the complete story of how I turned a natural cave beside a wild river into a small off-grid home using mostly materials I found around me. When I first discovered this cave in the rock, I immediately saw its potential. It was dry, naturally protected, and surrounded by an incredible landscape far away from roads and people. I began with what the river gave me. I collected driftwood and old boards washed onto the shore, built a staircase leading up to the cave, closed the entrance with a log wall, made a wooden door, and slowly created a simple interior with a bed, table, window, and wood stove. For the first time, the empty cave felt like a real shelter. But when I returned a few days later, I couldn't believe what I saw. A fire had destroyed almost the entire wooden front wall. I never found out exactly what happened—whether something had remained hot near the stove or someone had visited the cave while I was away. So I decided to rebuild it differently. This time, I collected stones from the riverbank and made a simple mortar from local mineral material, water, and clay. Stone by stone, I rebuilt the entire front wall, added a new window and door, and made the cave much stronger and safer. Outside, I built a small table and bench overlooking the river. Then the water began to rise. The path along the bank disappeared, and reaching the cave on foot was no longer possible. From then on, I started arriving by boat. What began as an empty hole in the rock slowly became a warm, quiet home beside the river—a place with a stove, a bed, shelter from the weather, and an incredible view of untouched nature.
