When the trees begin to turn and the air begins to crisp, there’s no other place people love to visit than the stunning state of Vermont. With rich New England history, quaint towns and plenty of tourist destinations, it’s no surprise that fall is one of the busiest seasons in the Green Mountains. But what goes together with fall like peanut butter does with jelly? Train rides of course. As a long standing tradition, the Vermont Rail System hosts a handful of fall excursions in part with the local towns they run through and/or do business with. This year, railfans were treated to a grand sight with the VRS rolling out their classic ALCo RS-1 #405 for this years trips. Sponsored by the Passumpsic Savings Bank and the town of Saint Johnsbury, 405 would pull multiple excursions over a two day period on 10 miles of former Rutland Railroad trackage between Saint Johnsbury and nearby Barnet and return. Offering riders beautiful sights of classic New England scenery and township. We first follow these trips before the main event began. The following day, the 405 would traverse over 80 miles on its own, one of the first times it has taken a trip of this extent in years, over a mix of former Rutland and Boston and Maine trackage between Saint Johnsbury and Bellows Falls, Vermont. In tow are the three coaches that VRS uses for their excursions, the classic ALCo looks right at home pulling this extremely rare move. Let’s follow this piece of history, as the 405 makes her way throughout the beautiful New England fall splendor. Filmed October 11th and 12th, 2026 ©Connecticut Rail Films 2026
