A rider came through Sherwood In the cold and pouring rain, “The King is caught beyond the hill, His road is blocked again!” Robin rose beside the fire, Little John stood at his side, “Call the Merry Men together — Before the dawn we ride!” No reward and no forgiveness, Neither silver, land nor gold, Only England calls her sons now And the greenwood hearts are bold. Ride, you outlaws, ride tonight! Through the darkness, toward the fight! Raise the bow and sound the horn, Ride until the breaking dawn! Though the law may call us wrong, Sherwood hearts are brave and strong. Let the hills of England sing Tonight the outlaws help the King! Through the mist they crossed the river, Through the woodland dark and deep, While the King's surrounded riders Held the narrow mountain keep. Then an arrow crossed the moonlight, Then another split the air, And the Merry Men of Sherwood Rose like shadows everywhere. Little John's staff struck like thunder, Friar Tuck came roaring through, Robin's arrows found their targets, And the royal trumpets blew. When the morning touched the hillside, King and outlaw stood as one, And Richard raised his hand to Robin: “England knows what you have done.” Ride, you outlaws, raise your bows! Home to Sherwood now we go! Let the bells of England sound, Let their thunder roll around. Not for silver, not for fame, Not for honour to our name, But when England needs us most, Sherwood answers like a ghost! Then the outlaws crossed the greenwood As the morning birds took wing, No crown upon their heads — But they had ridden for the King..
