Comet Rag by Ed C. Mahony (1910)

A well-written and rather dreamy rag whose title was inspired by a real comet. Astronomers had predicted the return of Halley's Comet in 1910 and it did show up as forecast. A major comet which becomes visible to the naked eye an average of every 76 years, it returned in 1986 and will appear again in 2061. Edward C. Mahoney (1881-1951) was a Boston native who wrote two rags, the other being "Hypnotic Rag" in 1912. He did write other things including marches and songs. He was a career musician also known as Eddy la Don for a time. He moved from New England to Los Angeles by the 1930s and continued his musical career until his death in 1951 at the age of 70. Two other rags from 1910 were named "Comet Rag", one by Al V. Peterson and the other by Leslie Groff. Harry J. Lincoln wrote "Halley's Comet Rag" also. This rag was published by Joseph M.
