Christoph Waltz spent thirty years on German-language TV. Then one audition saved Tarantino's impossible villain. 🎬
In 2008, Quentin Tarantino had written Hans Landa, a polite Nazi detective who works in four languages, and he couldn't find anybody who could play him. He gave himself one more week. "I was literally emotionally preparing myself to pull the plug," he said.
Then a 51-year-old actor from Vienna walked in. Waltz would later say, "I was already giving up." He read the scene they asked for, then kept going through the entire role, translating scenes into French and German as he went. "He gave us our movie back," Tarantino said.
Then it got weird, in a good way. Tarantino hid him from most of the cast until the cameras rolled. Waltz won Best Actor at Cannes and an Oscar. Tarantino wrote his next big part just for him. Waltz broke his pelvis falling off a horse, Jamie Foxx gave him a saddle with a seatbelt, and he won a second Oscar anyway.
Oh, and until Landa, this German-speaking actor had never once played a Nazi.
So was Hollywood blind for thirty years, or just too lazy to listen past the accent? Drop your take below 👇
