Psalm 23 is not only a shepherd's song. It is a journey from provision on the road to communion at home, from the green pasture to the house of the LORD. This peaceful worship prayer follows the covenant-keeping Shepherd who restores, protects, prepares a table, and sends goodness and chesed to pursue His sheep. Slow, meditative worship for still waters, dark valleys, and the long walk home.
Psalm 23: The Great I Am (The Lord is Me Shepherd)
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD (A Prayer in Song)
[Intro]
YHWH, the great I AM, the God who keeps His word,
Before the world was formed, You were my faithful Lord.
You bound Yourself in covenant, You spoke my name in love,
And now I lift my song to You, my Shepherd from above.
[Verse 1]
The LORD, He is my Shepherd, the covenant-keeping One,
The great and holy I AM, who feeds and tends His own.
He knows me by my name, He counts me as His sheep,
And because His hand upholds me, there is nothing I shall need.
[Pre-Chorus]
I shall not lack, I shall not fall, I shall not be in need,
For the One who owns the cattle on a thousand hills is leading me.
[Chorus]
You are my Shepherd, my Keeper, my King,
The great I AM, my everything.
You lead me to still waters where troubled hearts find peace,
Wherever the journey takes me, Your presence goes with me.
[Verse 2]
In arid, barren places, You search out fields of green,
You cause me to lie down where the tender grass is seen.
The sheep, they fear the rushing streams, so You still the raging tide,
And beside the quiet waters, You lay my soul beside.
[Pre-Chorus]
In Your presence I am nourished, in Your presence unafraid,
I recline in perfect safety, every anxious fear allayed.
[Chorus]
You are my Shepherd, my Keeper, my King,
The great I AM, my everything.
You lead me to still waters where troubled hearts find peace,
Wherever the journey takes me, Your presence goes with me.
[Verse 3]
You revive my fainting soul, You bring me back when lost,
Like the shepherd who leaves ninety-nine to seek the one at cost.
You lead me down the well-worn paths, the ancient righteous ways,
Not because I earned Your grace, but for the glory of Your name.
[Bridge 1]
For Your own name's sake, for the honor of Your fame,
Your reputation rests on me, so You guide me all the same.
You will not lose a single one entrusted to Your hand,
For a Shepherd true to His own name will bring His sheep back home again.
[Verse 4]
Though I walk the deepest ravine where the lurking shadows fall,
Through the valley of death's shadow, I will fear no ill at all.
For You are there beside me, You never turn away,
Your rod will strike the predator, Your staff will guide my way.
[Chorus 2]
You are my Shepherd, my Comfort, my Light,
My Courage in the terror of the night.
Your rod and staff, they comfort me, they drive my fears away,
Even in the darkest valley, my Shepherd, You will stay.
[Verse 5]
Then shepherd turns to gracious Host, the imagery unfolds,
You spread a lavish table, a feast of joy untold.
Right before my enemies, in the presence of my foes,
You honor me with oil poured out, and how my full cup overflows.
[Bridge 2]
Not merely just enough to help me barely make it through,
But saturated, running over, drenched in favor from You.
While the enemy is watching, You lift my weary head,
And crown me with Your gladness at the table You have spread.
[Verse 6]
Surely goodness and Your chesed, Your steadfast covenant love,
Will not merely gently follow, but pursue me from above.
They will hunt me down with mercy all the days that I shall live,
Till the journey turns to homecoming in the house where You forgive.
[Final Chorus]
You are my Shepherd, my Host, and my Friend,
The Alpha, the Omega, my beginning and my end.
What began as walking behind You now ends within Your door,
For I will dwell inside Your house, my Shepherd, evermore.
[Outro]
From provision on the journey to communion at the last,
From walking as a pilgrim to a home that holds me fast.
YHWH, my Shepherd, my Host, my faithful God,
In You I am complete, in You I am made whole.
Surely goodness, surely mercy, they will chase me all my days,
And I will dwell forever in Your house, and sing Your endless praise.
Amen. Amen.
