She met him on Bumble. By morning, Lauren Smith-Fields was dead. On December 11, 2021, 23-year-old Lauren Smith-Fields met Matthew LaFountain through Bumble and spent the night with him at her apartment in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Hours later, she was found unresponsive. The official medical examiner finding was accidental acute intoxication involving fentanyl, promethazine, hydroxyzine and alcohol. But that finding did not end the questions surrounding Lauren's death. What happened during those final hours? What did investigators find inside the apartment? Why did Lauren's family say they were not properly notified of her death? And why did questions about the investigation continue long after the initial medical finding? This documentary follows the reported final-night timeline, the emergency response, the family-notification controversy, disputed physical-evidence claims raised in litigation, the separate narcotics investigation involving DEA assistance, and the federal lawsuit that followed. The case also reached the courts. In February 2025, a federal judge ruled on the legal sufficiency of claims in the lawsuit; that decision was not a factual trial verdict. Then, in 2026, the litigation ended in a reported $30,000 settlement. The settlement itself was not a criminal conviction or an admission of liability. Throughout this investigation, we separate what is officially documented from what was alleged, disputed, or never conclusively established. Lauren Smith-Fields' story raises difficult questions about death investigations, family notification, forensic processing, drug-related investigations and what happens when a family's search for answers continues after an official cause of death has been issued. This video is based on publicly available court records, official statements, medical-examiner findings and published reporting. Allegations are identified as allegations. No person is accused here of committing a crime without a legal finding.
