Join me as we walk through the grounds and gardens of El Castillo, a full-size French Renaissance style castle in the heart of the New World. What is a French-inspired castle doing in Medellín, Colombia? It was built for Dr. José Tobón Uribe in 1930, who founded a pharmacy chain called Farmacia Pasteur, which can still be seen all over Colombia today. After his death over a decade later it was bought by businessman and philanthropist Diego Echavarría Misas who filled the inside with priceless treasures from all over the world. After his death in 1971, his wife Benedikta Zur Nieden donated the castle and its entire collection to the city of Medellín, to become a museum. The idea was to make world-class art accesible to those who would otherwise not be able to experience it. In this video, we take in the exterior of the castle from all angles and walk its balcony. We also spend time exploring its peaceful French gardens, cypress trees, pathways and fountains. In the neighborhood of El Poblado, it is an oasis and escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Video and photography is not permitted in the museum, so there is nothing of the inside here.
