Think about a moment from your past that you wish you could experience again. A childhood summer. A conversation with someone you loved. The best day of your life. We normally assume those moments are gone forever — preserved only as fading memories inside the brain.
But modern physics offers a much stranger possibility.
In 1905, Albert Einstein’s theory of special relativity shattered the idea of a universal clock. Time does not pass identically for every observer, and there may be no single cosmic “now” shared by the entire universe. Later, philosophers and physicists followed that idea toward one of the strangest interpretations of reality ever proposed: the block universe.
Under eternalism, space and time form one enormous four-dimensional structure. Past, present, and future are not continuously created and destroyed. Instead, every moment occupies its own position in spacetime.
Your childhood may still be there.
The version of you from ten years ago may still exist at another coordinate in time.
And the future may be just as much a part of spacetime as the moment you are experiencing right now.
Tonight, we slowly explore Einstein’s relativity, spacetime, the block universe, eternalism, time dilation, the relativity of simultaneity, memory, determinism, free will, and the unsettling possibility that our experience of time may be very different from the true structure of reality.
This does not mean you can travel backward through time or return to your childhood. Under the block universe interpretation, those moments may remain real without being accessible from the present.
So as you relax and drift toward sleep, consider one final possibility:
Perhaps your past was never erased.
Perhaps every person you have been, every moment you have lived, and every memory you thought was gone still has its permanent place somewhere in spacetime.
The past may be unreachable.
But it may never truly disappear.
