We are celebrating BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY Sunday, September 20, 2026 and it is Community Lunch Sunday too! WILL YOU PLEASE JOIN US! After apartheid ended in South Africa, Nelson Mandela’s government created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995, chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The commission invited victims and perpetrators to testify publicly about human-rights abuses. More than 22,000 victims gave statements, creating an official record of suffering that could not simply be ignored. The process was painful and imperfect, and many victims felt justice remained incomplete. Yet confronting the truth helped South Africans understand what had happened, recognize one another’s experiences, and begin rebuilding a shared national identity. The commission showed that looking back is not always about staying trapped in the past—it can help a person or nation choose to move forward.
