America's New Airless Tire Could Make Flat Tires Obsolete

This video explores how NASA-developed airless tire technology could eventually eliminate one of the oldest problems in automotive history: the flat tire. Originally created for planetary rovers, NASA’s Superelastic Tire replaces compressed air with a woven structure made from Nitinol, a nickel-titanium shape-memory alloy capable of undergoing extreme deformation and immediately returning to its original shape. Unlike conventional pneumatic tires, the design cannot lose pressure from nails, sharp rocks, or punctures because there is no pressurized air inside to escape. The technology is now being adapted for Earth by companies such as SMART Tire, which is developing commercial applications based on NASA’s original research. However, major challenges remain, including the high cost of Nitinol, highway noise and vibration, heat management, long-term fatigue, and the difficulty of manufacturing millions of safety-certified tires at scale. While airless tires are unlikely to replace traditional tires overnight, this breakthrough suggests that pressure-loss flats may eventually become a problem engineers can design out of transportation entirely.
