You’ve been standing at the bend in the dirt lane for a while now, sleeves pulled down over your hands, and you still haven’t found a reason to leave.
It’s the house. Obviously.
It sits behind a white picket fence like it’s been keeping a seat warm for someone, and for one silly second you hope that someone is you. A Victorian cottage painted the yellow of lemon cake, with white trim along every edge of the roof like icing on a birthday cake. Blue porch posts. Pumpkins on the steps. Flower boxes under every upstairs window, still full. Every kid who ever drew a cottage by the sea was drawing this one, they just didn’t know it yet.
Past the house the land gives up and the autumn cove takes over. Ocean waves roll in against the rocks and break white and slide back, then do it all again. They’re loud in a soft way, if that makes sense. The kind of loud that makes everything else go quiet. Out on the point there’s a lighthouse with a little red-roofed house tucked close beside it, like they’ve been friends forever. One sailboat. It hasn’t moved in ages. Maybe it found its spot too.
The sun is warm on the back of your neck. The sea breeze comes up off the water, cool and salty, and you can hear it moving through the maples over your head without a single leaf coming down. The ones that already fell lie scattered on the grass like somebody spilled a jar of gold coins and decided to leave them.
A bird starts up in the hydrangeas by the fence. Another answers from the trees, and then the birdsong just keeps going, chirping back and forth like two neighbors who can’t stop catching up. Two white chairs sit on the lawn facing the water. Empty. You already know which one would be yours.
Autumn by the sea in New England feels like this. The light goes thick, like honey sliding off a spoon, and golden hour shows up early and refuses to leave.
You’re pretty sure the sea writes the same letter to this house every afternoon. Same waves. Same hush against the rocks. And the house reads it every time like it’s brand new.
You’d read it too, if you lived here. Curled up on that porch with a mug of something hot and the book you’re supposed to be studying, a blanket over your knees, never getting past page two. That’s what slow living is, really. Nobody planning it. Just an afternoon that’s too nice to hurry.
Whatever you carried down this lane, it’s getting harder to hold onto. That’s how it works on this coast. You let the tide take every worry back out to sea, one wave at a time, and you don’t ask for any of it back.
No one is playing music. No one needs to. Just the ocean waves, and the birdsong riding on top of them.
It’s such a tender afternoon. The kind you could fall asleep inside, warm and safe, with the sea saying hush.
You stay right here by the fence. You don’t even need to open the gate.
