Now you’re still out here on the porch with the striped wool blanket from the rocking chair pulled over your knees, and you’ve completely stopped pretending you’re going back inside. The wood stove has been going since four. You can feel it on your shins from here, that slow dry heat that gets into your socks and stays there. Every so often a log shifts and the crackling fire gives this little pop that makes the dog’s ear twitch. He doesn’t wake up, though. He took the sheepskin about an hour ago and he is not giving it back. The cat is worse. She’s on the armchair, on the good cushion, curled into the quilt like she paid rent for it. The whole porch smells like baked apples. They’ve been softening in the skillet on top of the stove since before the sun started going down, and the chestnuts on the table are still warm in their pan. Your mug is still warm too. There’s honey in it. You told yourself you’d study out here for an hour. That was a lie, and honestly, you knew it when you said it. Someone put candles inside the pumpkins. Someone lit the oil lamp in the window behind you, and the light through the lace curtain is the color of tea. Past the rail, the autumn lake is so flat it looks fake. Soft waves keep folding in against the dock, slow, like they know they have all night. Lanterns glow down the whole length of it. There’s a rowboat tied alongside, and a swan resting near the reeds, so perfectly still you’d think someone painted it there. Birdsong from the birches on the left. Then only the stove for a while. The crickets are soft this late in the year, just a thin warm hum somewhere near the steps. Once in a long while a single frog calls out from the reeds, like it didn’t get the memo that it’s almost November. A breeze comes off the water, and you only notice because the leaf garland over your head moves. Barely. It’s the kind of quiet that isn’t actually quiet. No music. Your phone is face down somewhere and you’ve stopped caring where. You pull the blanket up a little higher. You don’t decide to stay. It just sort of happens. Golden hour is sliding behind the mountains now and the islands have gone orange at the edges, and you think, not for the first time, that this lake house is the only place you ever fall into a gentler world without trying. It’s so cozy out here it’s almost unfair. Your heart slows down to match the water. You could sleep right here in this chair. Ten hours could go by like this and you’d let them. The lake stays gold. Somehow, so do you.
