A little taste of home in Sweden❤️
Today I'm bringing a little bit of Serbia / Balkan into my kitchen! Even though I've been living abroad for a while now, there are some foods that will always remind me of home.
I hope you enjoy spending the day with me and maybe even feel inspired to try one of these recipes yourself!
Thank you for watching and beiging here :) @EmilijaHoff
I've shared all the recipes below if you'd like to give them a try. ❤️
The dishes I prepared:
Breakfast: Prženija 🍳
Ingredients:
2 bell peppers
2 tomatoes
4 eggs
Salt to taste
A little oil for frying
You can use more or less of everything, depending on how many people you're cooking for. This amount was enough for about 2 people.
Instructions:
Start by cutting the peppers into smaller pieces and frying them until they start to soften. Then chop the tomatoes, add them to the peppers, and cook until they're soft.
Finally, add the eggs and salt, and stir until the eggs are cooked.
And that's it! :)
You can try eating it the way I showed you in the video, or just the normal way, with a fork.
Dessert: Medeno srce (Serbian Chocolate & Jam Cake) 🍫❤️
Ingredients:
2 cups of milk
1 cup of coconut sugar / or 2 cups of sugar (original recepe)
3 tbsp of jam
3 cups of flour
4 tsp of cinnamon
2 tsp of baking soda
A little coconut oil for greasing the baking dish
For the topping:
Strawberry jam (I used homemade)
100 g of chocolate (I used 70% dark chocolate with no added sugar)
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 200°C.
Mix the milk, coconut sugar and 3 tablespoons of jam together. Then add the flour, cinnamon and baking soda and mix until everything is well combined.
Grease a baking dish with a little coconut oil (that's what I used), pour in the mixture and bake for about 20–25 minutes, depending on your oven.
Let the cake cool slightly, then spread a layer of jam over the top.
Melt the chocolate and pour it over the jam, spreading it evenly.
Let the chocolate set a little before cutting the cake.
And that's it! A super easy and delicious cake. ❤️
Homemade Strawberry Jam 🍓
Ingredients:
Strawberries (frozen)
1–2 tsp of chia seeds
Honey or maple syrup, to taste
Instructions:
Cook the strawberries until they break down completely and the mixture thickens into a jam-like consistency. Then add about 1 teaspoon of chia seeds to thicken the jam. You can add another teaspoon if you're making a bigger batch or want it a little thicker.
Let it cool down, then add some honey or maple syrup to sweeten it.
Punjene paprike (Serbian Stuffed Peppers) 🫑❤️
Ingredients:
Bell peppers (as many as you need)
500 g of minced meat
500 g of onions
1 carrot
15 tsp of rice
Vegeta seasoning, salt, black pepper, paprika powder
A little oil for frying
Instructions:
Start by chopping the onions into small pieces (I used a food processor to make things easier). Fry them in a little oil for about 7–8 minutes.
Add one chopped carrot and continue cooking until the onions start turning golden.
Then add the minced meat and cook everything together for about 30 minutes.
Once the meat is cooked, add 15 teaspoons of rice and cook for another 3–4 minutes. Remove from the heat, add Vegeta, salt, black pepper and paprika powder and mix everything well.
While the filling is cooking, wash and prepare the peppers. Cut around the stems and remove the seeds, but keep the tops because you'll use them as little lids later.
Fill each pepper with the meat and rice mixture and close it with its top.
Arrange the stuffed peppers in a baking dish, add a little Vegeta and salt over the peppers and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
Cook in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 45–60 minutes, depending on your oven and the size of the peppers.
After 45–60 minutes, take the peppers out of the oven and prepare the zaprška. Heat a little oil in a small pan, but don't let it get too hot. Add ½ teaspoon of paprika powder and stir briefly.
Pour the mixture over the stuffed peppers, then put them back in the oven without the foil and bake for another 20–30 minutes.
And that's it! Homemade Serbian stuffed peppers. ❤️
A little tip: If you're making a bigger batch with 1 kg of meat, use 1 kg of onions and around 30 teaspoons of rice. But I made a smaller batch because I didn't want to end up with 30 stuffed peppers. :)
