Before independence, there were different dreams about Abaco’s future.
“Abaco — The Road We Almost Took” is a Bahamian storytelling ballad exploring the campaign to keep Abaco under British rule as The Bahamas moved toward independence in 1973.
Performed by Kendell “Roots” Rolle, this song remembers the petitioners, community leaders and differing voices that shaped this chapter of our history.
The story follows:
• The Greater Abaco Council and the 1971 petition.
• Men representing settlements across Abaco.
• The reported explosions near the Marsh Harbour dock during Lynden Pindling’s 1972 address.
• The continuing campaign for separation and the debate in Britain’s Parliament.
• Independence on July 10, 1973, with Abaco remaining part of The Bahamas.
Among those named are Leonard Thompson, Sherwin Archer, Lucien Stratton, Cecil Mills, Errington Watkins, Chuck Hall and others whose names deserve to be remembered.
This is a musical interpretation of historical events, with poetic storytelling. The dock incident is not presented as a proven assassination attempt, and no responsibility is assigned to the petitioners.
Some photographs or illustrations may depict people at different ages or offer artistic representations of the period.
