When the Old Ships Came Home | Abaco’s Mailboat Story | Kendell “Roots” Rolle Before the flights and modern roads, there was the sea—and somebody waiting on shore. “When the Old Ships Came Home,” performed by Kendell “Roots” Rolle, takes us on a nostalgic musical journey through Abaco’s shipping heritage. From schooner sails to diesel engines, this storytelling ballad remembers Brothers, Quick, Admired, Albertine Adoue, Priscilla, Content, Stede Bonnet, Deborah K and the Captain Dean legacy. It honours the captains, mates, cooks and crews who carried provisions, passengers, letters and hope—and the families who gathered at the landing to welcome them home. “A bag of flour, a letter from Ma, Someone returning from somewhere far…” Presented by AFA Digital Music Studio, this song forms part of our work to preserve Abaco’s history through music, alongside our farming and community stories. This video includes historical photographs and recreated imagery. Recreated scenes are artistic interpretations. 💬 Did you travel aboard one of these boats?
