Watch Vincent van Gogh, The Bedroom, 1889 come together stroke by stroke, from blank canvas to final touch, set to music by Satie.
This is the Chicago version, painted in Saint-Rémy in 1889 after a canvas made in Arles the year before. In letters to his brother, Van Gogh wrote of flat colors, as in Japanese prints—and there are no cast shadows. The real room had a slanted wall, and the tilted perspective was deliberate: the colors were meant to suggest rest.
This is an interpretive animation: a plausible reconstruction of how the canvas may have been painted, not a historical record of the artist's process.
