Exploring A Hidden Paradise at the Edge of Java | Peucang Island, Indonesia

Ujung Kulon National Park is one of Indonesia’s most important, protected areas and the last refuge of the critically endangered Javan rhinoceros. The park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and formally established as a national park in 1992. Within this protected landscape lies Peucang Island, a remote island off the western tip of Java, surrounded by clear waters, white sandy beaches, and lush lowland rainforest. It took nearly 10 hours of travel by land and boat from Jakarta to reach this secluded corner of Indonesia, where mobile signal is limited and the pace of life feels wonderfully slow. Arriving on Pulau Peucang feels like stepping into another world. Wild deer and monkeys can often be seen roaming freely around the island, while the surrounding forest offers a glimpse into one of Java’s remaining natural wildernesses. One of the island’s most famous landmarks is its enormous Kiara tree. Local accounts associate this ancient-looking tree with the history of the island and the 1883 Krakatau eruption and tsunami. Estimated to be more than a century old, it stands today as a remarkable living landmark amid the forest.
