this is a reflective video essay about identity, social expectations, stereotypes, confidence and the subtle ways other people’s assumptions can shape how we behave. Why do we let other people's assumptions change who we become?
It begins with an ordinary social situation: friends and family talking in different groups, and the feeling that some conversations seem naturally open to certain people while others feel as though they require an invitation.
From there, this essay explores a broader question: what happens when the version of us that exists in other people’s minds begins to influence the person we become?
Why are some people automatically treated as though their opinions belong in a conversation?
Why can being underestimated make it harder to demonstrate what we actually know?
What is the difference between being listened to and being taken seriously?
And how much of our confidence, hesitation and behaviour is shaped by the expectations we repeatedly encounter?
The video looks at gender roles, social assumptions, stereotypes, self-consciousness, belonging, family roles and the labels we quietly place on one another — the clever one, the quiet one, the difficult one, the responsible one, the person who “wouldn’t be interested”.
But it also turns the question around.
Because while we may dislike being reduced to other people’s assumptions, we all make assumptions about others too.
Perhaps the deeper challenge is to remain curious about the people around us — especially the people we think we already understand.
A video essay about identity, perception, expectations, social psychology, belonging and the distance between who we are and who other people think we are.
