Mindung Ssireum, a traditional intangible cultural heritage of Korean wrestling designated as a UNESCO World Heritage, is a style of wrestling performed without grips (no satva). This intangible cultural heritage, preserved and passed down by Song Jun-ho, President of the World Subak Federation, was transmitted by North Korean masters Song Chang-ryol and Oh Jin-hwan, as well as Min Wan-sik, and Kim Hak-cheon, an intangible cultural heritage practitioner of the Korean ethnic group in China. It is confirmed as a documentary heritage through cross-testimonies, demonstration videos by practitioners, and even footage filmed in Hamhung, South Hamgyong Province during the Japanese colonial period (1930). The tactical mechanism of Mindung Ssireum provides the takedown and grappling techniques that form the basis of Subak, an ancient striking martial art. Published by the Korea Cultural Journal, a signatory of the United Nations SDG Publishers Compact. This content supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through the preservation and dissemination of intangible cultural heritage. Subak was included in the 2019 Preliminary List of Candidates for National Intangible Cultural Heritage designation by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea. In 2018, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea announced the officially recognized traditional martial arts transmission categories under the Traditional Martial Arts Promotion Act: Subak,Ssireum,Traditional Archery,Taekkyeon We introduce various activities related to the preservation of historical video materials, movement documentation, traditional training methods, genealogical research, and disappearing embodied knowledge associated with Korean martial arts heritage. We engage in a wide range of activities, including cultural heritage preservation, education and promotion, online seminars, archive research, cultural heritage education, and participation in international discussions regarding cultural sustainability and international NGO networks.
