In August 1942, Australians heard a famous Sydney broadcaster, Major Charles Cousens, reading for Radio Tokyo as a prisoner of war.
Before the war, Charles Cousens was one of the best-known voices on Sydney radio. Six months after Singapore fell, his old station heard that voice coming from Tokyo, and its manager said it sounded lifeless.
This is the record of what he was ordered to broadcast, the four methods he later said he used against it, the woman he picked to host Zero Hour, and what a Sydney court, the Australian Army and an American jury made of it all.
