Nickelodeon gave Marc Summers a studio audience, a collection of pie machines, and one very flexible question: What Would You Do? The answers included a tarantula, a stage magic guillotine, and a monster truck taking on some extremely small opponents.
Today on Fever Dream Nostalgia, we’re revisiting the early ’90s Nickelodeon show that made being in the audience look like the best attraction at Universal Studios Florida. If you remember the Pie Pod, Pie Slide, Pie Coaster, Pie Wash, or Wall o’ Stuff, prepare to remember why an ordinary family outing could become a very unusual television appearance.
We follow the show’s audience-participation setup, the family challenges, and the choices that made its volunteers so entertaining. A daughter gets to pie her mother. A man draws the line at a spider. A kid refuses to demonstrate his hidden talent. And the supposed reward can be another trip straight into the mess.
There’s also a bigger idea hiding underneath all that cream: sometimes the opportunity to participate is enough to make a game compelling. We look at how the studio’s theme-park setting helped that work, then reach Marc Summers’s own candid comments about the program. The video separates what the sources establish from what remains unclear, especially around the end of production.
This is a funny full-show retrospective for anyone who grew up with classic Nickelodeon, Double Dare, Universal Studios, and the strange, colorful world of ’90s kids’ television. It includes close analysis of a preserved episode, a look at the later prize wall, and a brief September 2026 update on Summers’s independent Double Dare anniversary event.
Would you hold the tarantula, try the Limburger Float, or take four pies? And if you were actually in the What Would You Do? audience, tell us your story below.
