India’s defence manufacturing industry has reached a major milestone — defence production hit a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY2025-26, while India’s defence exports climbed to ₹38,424 crore. But the bigger story is what comes next. India’s indigenous defence systems are increasingly being positioned for international markets. The Akash air-defence system has reportedly expanded its export footprint into Central Asia, with former DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V. Kamat confirming exports to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Specific contract values, quantities and variants have not been publicly disclosed. At the same time, reports have emerged of Armenian interest in India’s Divyastra Mk-1 loitering munition. This remains a reported assessment rather than a confirmed Armenian or Indian government procurement deal, and the claim has not been independently verified by the two defence ministries. In this video, we analyse India’s rapidly expanding defence manufacturing and export ecosystem — from the ₹1.78 lakh crore production milestone and ₹38,424 crore export figure to the growing international footprint of Indian defence platforms. The government is targeting ₹3 lakh crore in annual defence production and ₹50,000 crore in annual defence exports by 2029. The key question is no longer only how much India manufactures for its own armed forces, but how far Indian defence products can expand into international markets.
