MLB has a Savannah Bananas problem, and it is getting harder to ignore.
The Savannah Bananas were supposed to be the team that made baseball fun again.
For years, they were one of the best stories in the sport. Jesse Cole turned a struggling team in Savannah, Georgia into a viral phenomenon built around Banana Ball, dancing players, wild celebrations, the Party Animals, sold out stadiums, and a version of baseball designed to make sure fans were never bored.
Then the Bananas became enormous.
TikTok clips exploded. Tickets became almost impossible to get. Tours started selling out major stadiums. National broadcasts followed. What began as a strange experiment in Savannah suddenly became one of the fastest growing sports brands in America.
And that is where the problem started.
As the Savannah Bananas became more popular, the criticism became louder.
Some baseball fans believe the dancing, trick plays, choreographed celebrations, nonstop social media moments, and circus style entertainment have pushed Banana Ball too far away from the sport that created it.
Others believe the exact opposite.
They see packed stadiums, young fans paying attention to baseball, and millions of people watching online and wonder why traditional baseball is not learning from them.
That is the Savannah Bananas problem.
They may have figured out how to capture an audience baseball has struggled to reach.
But in doing it, they have created something so different that fans are now debating whether Banana Ball should even be considered baseball anymore.
Are the Savannah Bananas helping save baseball for a new generation?
Or have they turned America’s pastime into a viral content machine?
