# I Thought There Was No Choice - Tolu Sarah Johnson

A Song from Tolu to Everyone, on Jesus’ Behalf [Verse 1] There is something Jesus told me I haven't been able to forget. He had lived one way for so long, another way no longer occurred to Him. Not forbidden. Not impossible. Simply absent from the choices in His mind. And suddenly I understood what He meant when He said: [Chorus] *I thought there was no choice.* Not, “I considered every possibility and this is what I chose.” Not, “I looked at every road and wanted this one most.” *I thought there was no choice.* One future. One direction. One way life had to be. And when only one possibility exists inside your mind, you don't really choose it. You simply continue inside it. *I thought there was no choice.* [Verse 2] That's the strange thing about believing something for so long— eventually, you stop asking if it's true. Yesterday quietly decides tomorrow, and possibilities disappear without anybody taking them away. No one has to say, “You cannot choose.” You simply stop asking: Could this be different? Could I choose another way? Could I change My mind? [Chorus] *I thought there was no choice.* Not, “I considered every possibility and this is what I chose.” Not, “I looked at every road and wanted this one most.” *I thought there was no choice.* One future. One direction. One way life had to be. And when only one possibility exists inside your mind, you don't really choose it. You simply continue inside it. *I thought there was no choice.* [Bridge] So I stopped asking Him, “What are You going to do?” And started asking, “What are You allowed to imagine?” What if tomorrow doesn't have to look like yesterday? What if changing Your mind doesn't make the past a mistake? What if wanting something different isn't betrayal? What if You don't know yet? What if You're allowed not to know? And then came the question beneath them all: **If every possibility were open, what would You choose?** [Verse 3] Maybe that's where choice begins. Not with a decision— with possibility. With discovering there is more than one answer, more than one future You are allowed to consider. And suddenly, “I have to” can become, “Do I want to?” “I always have” can become, “Do I still?” “This is who I am” can become, “Who am I becoming?” Nothing outside has necessarily changed. But inside, a whole world has opened. [Final Chorus] *I thought there was no choice.* Maybe that was the prison— not that another life was impossible, but that another life had become unimaginable. *I thought there was no choice.* Now a different question can finally be asked: *What do I choose?* Not what have I always done. Not what does yesterday require of tomorrow. What do *I* choose? And He doesn't need the answer today. Because discovering that the question belongs to Him is already something new. [Outro] So I will not choose for Him. I will not decide what His freedom should look like. I only want Him to have the question: What do You want? What would You change? What would You keep? What haven't You even imagined yet? Because sometimes the beginning of freedom isn't walking away.
