"There's something from before you. It's about these wings. I loved someone who praised my flame, but only from the ground. He liked me small enough to hold whenever he was around. Each time I climbed into the clouds, he asked me not to go. At last he told me, 'Lose the wings, or lose the life we know.' I chose the open sky. He left. I watched him fade from view. I told myself it didn't hurt. Tonight I'm telling you." [Pre-Chorus] Greg set the lute beside him. He didn't reach for dice. He moved a little closer and looked into her eyes. [Chorus] Give me wings, Ruby. Give me wings tonight. Don't make yourself smaller just to keep me by your side. I love you in your true form. I love the life you choose. If you need to fly, then let me fly with you. [Verse 2] "He was a dragon from the north. He knew the storms I knew. We crossed the frozen mountain peaks where snow could hide the moon. But home became a list of rules: one throne, one quiet wife, A clutch of sons, no songs at dawn, no journeys of my own. He didn't hate my wings. He hated where they carried me. He wanted love to mean that I would stay where he could see. When I refused, he turned north without a last goodbye. I kept his scarf through summer, then I let that old love die." [Chorus] Give me wings, Ruby. Give me wings tonight. Don't make yourself smaller just to keep me by your side. I love you in your true form. I love the life you choose. If you need to fly, then let me fly with you. [Verse 3] Greg pressed his forehead to her snout and kept both hands in place. The man who once had feared her fire now held her dragon face. "I can't undo what he did, but hear me when I say: I don't want half of Ruby. I won't love you halfway. I want the claws, the tail, the flame, the miles you need to roam. You shouldn't lose your freedom just to make me feel at home. If flying is a part of you, then I should join you there." By dusk he found the wizard and bought one bright blue vial. [Verse 4] Greg drank it in the courtyard. Two wings tore through his shirt. The left one opened normally. The right one dragged through dirt. Ruby laughed until she cried, then grew to her full size. She lowered one great shoulder. "Are you sure you want to try?" He shook his head and spread his wings. "I want to fly with you." She rose against the northern stars and through the cold night flew. Greg missed the roof, clipped Finn's old flag, then caught the open air. Ruby slowed until his hand could rest against her there. [Chorus] Give me wings, Ruby. Give me wings tonight. You don't have to shrink yourself to keep me by your side. I love you in your true form. I love the life you choose. Take me where you used to go. Together we will fly. [Verse 5] They crossed the ocean under green and violet northern light. They circled close above a volcano burning bright. At last she found her hidden spring, as wide as half the hill, Deep enough for all of her, warm, open, dark, and still. Greg floated near her folded wing, exhausted, soaked, and sore. Ruby whispered, "No one followed when I needed sky before." He placed one hand against her scales and held it steady there. "Then when you need the sky again, I want to meet you there." [Final Chorus] Give me wings, Ruby. Give me wings again. You don't have to trade your sky to make me want to stay. I love you in your true form. I love the life you choose. When your heart says, "Fly," spread your wings. I'll find a way to follow you. [Outro] The potion faded with the dawn. Greg dropped into the spring. Ruby caught him with her tail and sheltered him beneath her wing. She had no need to lose herself or live on someone else's terms. Greg only asked the wizard, "Can you make the next pair last?"
