In this video, we explore thermal compensation in transistor bias circuits — how adding a diode (or a diode-connected transistor) in the base circuit almost eliminates the effect of temperature on the operating-point current, and how this idea is implemented in a real circuit using the bias Thevenin equivalent.
🔹 What you’ll learn in this video:
✅ A review of operating-point stability with an emitter resistor and removing the effect of beta variations
✅ How the emitter current IE depends on the thermal voltage VT, and therefore on temperature
✅ The core compensation idea: using a diode in the base circuit to cancel the temperature variation of VBE
✅ Analyzing the circuit with an ideal current source IB′, writing KCL at the base node and KVL in the base-emitter loop
✅ The condition for eliminating beta’s effect: R_D/(1+β) ≪ R_E, or equivalently R_E(1+β) ≫ R_D
✅ Calculating ∂IE/∂T in terms of ∂VD/∂T and ∂VBE/∂T
✅ The full-compensation condition: matching the thermal variation of the diode and the base-emitter junction so ∂IE/∂T becomes zero
✅ Why a transistor with its collector tied to the base is used in practice instead of a diode
✅ The role of the potentiometer RD in tuning the thermal-compensation condition
✅ Examining the real circuit with a Thevenin bias (V_Th and R_Th) instead of an ideal current source
✅ Deriving V_Th and R_Th from the base’s perspective and arriving at the simplified circuit
✅ The final condition: R_Th much larger than R_D, so ∂IE/∂T is nearly zero and thermal compensation holds
This video is a complete and practical learning resource for electrical and electronics engineering students, and anyone interested in designing stable transistor amplifiers, for understanding thermal compensation of the operating point.
