County: Hampshire Dates filmed: Tuesday the 24th of February / Friday the 13th of March 2026 Route: Southampton Eastern Docks Branch Line Closest timing point: Southampton Dock Gates (on Real Time Trains) Crossing type: Automatic Open Crossing Locally-monitored by traincrew with Barriers (AOCL+B) Filming location: Chapel Road, Southampton (SO14 5BJ) Two different visits to this iconic Southampton crossing. It's well and truly in the shadow of nearby Canute Road crossing, but is still very iconic to me. Here, in this video, is something that took something in the region of eight years for me to catch: a fully-operational, faultless lowering at this elusive crossing, with the train not even stopping for Canute Road crossing until after it had cleared this one! It sailed cleanly past with the crossing fully working as it should. Following on from that just over two weeks later, we see another faultless lowering, so maybe something defective has finally been fixed. I hope you enjoy this video! As can quite clearly be heard, the iconic, blaring 'Yodalarm YO5' alarm has sadly gone from this crossing after not sounding for quite some time, and eventually snapping off of its bracket and hanging down beside the mast. However, it has received quite a decent replacment: a 'Stahl' generation 'Yodalarm YO3' alarm dating all the way back to 2014! You can, however, clearly hear that the other older alarm at this crossing was still going quite crazy (since also replaced by a horrible, buzzy MoFlash alarm)!
