Welcome to today’s Bible reading! In Genesis chapters 20 and 21, we witness God's protection, faithfulness, and power to fulfil His promises. Despite human weaknesses and difficult circumstances, God remains faithful to His Word. He protects Sarah, corrects Abraham, fulfils His promise by giving Abraham and Sarah their son Isaac, and provides for Hagar and Ishmael in the wilderness.
KEY LESSONS FROM GENESIS 20–21
1. God protects and fulfils His purpose — Genesis 20
Abraham told Abimelech that Sarah was his sister, and God intervened to protect Sarah and preserve His plan. This account reminds us that God is sovereign, but it also warns us against fear and dishonesty. We must learn to trust God and walk in truth.
2. God hears our prayers — Genesis 20:17
Abraham prayed for Abimelech and his household, and God healed them. This teaches us the importance of intercessory prayer. Let us pray for our families, church members, leaders, and those who are in need.
3. Nothing is too hard for God — Genesis 21:1–2
God visited Sarah as He had promised, and she gave birth to Isaac in her old age. What seemed impossible to human understanding became a testimony of God's faithfulness.
“The LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.”* — Genesis 21:1 (KJV)
4. Rejoice in God's faithfulness — Genesis 21:6–7
Sarah rejoiced when Isaac was born. Her story reminds us to remain faithful while waiting on God and to give Him glory when His promises are fulfilled.
5. God hears the cry of the afflicted — Genesis 21:14–19
When Hagar and Ishmael were in the wilderness and their water was exhausted, God heard the boy's cry and showed Hagar a well. Even in desperate situations, God sees those who are suffering and is able to provide a way forward.
6. Trust God's provision in difficult seasons — Genesis 21:19–20
God opened Hagar's eyes to see the well and provided water for her son. Sometimes, in our distress, we need God to give us wisdom, direction, and the ability to recognise the help He has provided.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and for keeping Your promises. Forgive me whenever fear causes me to act outside Your will. Teach me to walk in truth, trust Your timing, and remain steadfast in prayer. Just as You provided for Hagar and Ishmael, please provide for those facing difficult circumstances. Strengthen my faith, use me to encourage others, and help me share the Gospel with those who need salvation. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
EVANGELISM MESSAGE — REACHING THE UNREACHED
Genesis 20–21 reminds us that God is faithful, hears the cries of the afflicted, and fulfils His promises. Above all, God has provided salvation through Jesus Christ. Whatever your situation may be, do not lose hope. Turn to the Lord, repent of your sins, and put your faith in Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to give eternal life to all who believe in Him.
Let us rise up in faith, pray for lost souls, and proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to every nation and every people. Someone needs to hear that God's mercy is available and that salvation is found in Jesus alone.
