The turkey goes in, the oven heats up, and the old grease starts to smoke, with your whole family on the way. Every November in my butcher shop in Newark, New Jersey, it was the same story. Tonight I show you how to clean your oven before Thanksgiving with a four-dollar bag of baking soda, and no fighting. By Thursday you open the oven door and see clear glass, the light shining in, and nothing burnt behind it. Seven steps, in the order of the calendar, each with a price, a reason and a test. Step three is a button on your oven you must not press, and the last step is the one nobody does.
You do not need a razor blade, steel wool or a can of oven spray. You need baking soda, white vinegar, Dawn, a plastic spatula, a Scotch-Brite pad and two quiet nights, about fifteen dollars if you already own Dawn.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
• Clean on the calendar: racks Saturday, paste Sunday, wipe Monday, test Wednesday
• Soak the racks in the bathtub with hot water and Dawn
• Skip the self-clean button: the oven makers' own manuals warn about it
• The paste: one pound of baking soda, one tablespoon of salt, two tablespoons of water
• Spread it thick, keep it off the heating element, leave it overnight
• Wipe with a plastic spatula, never metal, and use vinegar only after the soda is gone
• Accept the spots: a thin stain rarely smokes
• Run a 15-minute test at 350°F on Wednesday night, so Thursday has no surprises
A note on prices: the prices I mention are what I found on Target's website when this video was made. Prices change from store to store and week to week, so yours may be a little different.
