How to keep your house cool without running the air conditioner all day: 12 old Italian rules (a sun map, closing the sunny side early, shade outside the glass, opening the house at night, pointing the window fan out, the attic, the ceiling fan, the oven, the little heaters, humidity) and what to do when it is really hot. It is three o'clock in July, the AC has been running since breakfast, and upstairs still feels like an oven. It is not you. Most of us let the heat in all morning and pay a machine all afternoon to throw it back out.

I'm Enzo. I'm 74. I grew up in Bari, in two stone rooms with no air conditioning, and for 41 years my wife Carmela and I ran a butcher shop in Newark, where every degree of summer heat was a fight for my cooler. These are the 12 rules we use to keep our old two-story house cooler with less AC, plus la controra, the Bari afternoon.
IN THIS VIDEO
• Rule 1: Learn where the sun goes in your house (the sun map)
• Rule 2: Close the sunny side before the sun gets there
• Rule 3: Stop the sun outside the glass, not inside
• Rule 4: Open the house at night, close it in the morning
• Rule 5: Give the air a way in and a way out (the chimney effect)
• Rule 6: Point the window fan out, not in
• Rule 7: Let the attic breathe (what I found stuffed in my attic in 1978)
• Rule 8: The ceiling fan cools you, not the room
• Rule 9: The oven goes on vacation in the afternoon
• Rule 10: The little heaters you forgot about
• Rule 11: Wet air feels hotter. Dry it out
• Rule 12: When it is really hot, a fan is not enough
• Bonus: La controra, the Bari afternoon

SAFETY: in a real heat wave a fan is not enough. Use air conditioning or a cool place (your local health department can tell you where), drink water and check on each other. Go into the attic only early in the morning; roofs, attic fans and wiring are for a professional. Keep children away from window fans and open windows. If a fan cord is cracked, do not tape it, throw the fan away.
Tell me in the comments what town you are in and which room in your house is the hottest in the summer, because I want to know if everybody has a back bedroom like mine.

Next time: the shower and the tub, cleaned the way a butcher washes down his shop. Fix one thing today. A presto, my friend.
