If you came to faith later in life looking for refuge and found that the welcome came with a checklist — this song is for you.
For those who checked all the boxes, sat in the pews, and tried to follow the steps — only to discover that acceptance was conditional and belonging had fine print. When you finally stepped off the religious treadmill the warmth faded and the margin became your new address.
And the hardest part wasn't leaving the building.
It was the question that followed you out the door.
Does the Maker still care about me?
Here is what nobody told you when you were handed the paperwork at the door. The treasure you were searching for was already living inside you. Christ in you — not Christ above you keeping score. The Father was never in the building watching from a distance. He was in you when you walked in. He was in you when you walked out. The distance was never real.
The ledger is ash. The courtroom is closed. The conditional welcome of religion was never His.
You were never an outsider to Him.
You were the one He was living inside of all along.

The Outsider's Welcome
Verse 1
You came to the doors when the wandering finally wore you down
Looking for shelter from all of the wreckage looking for solid ground
They welcomed you warmly and handed you papers and showed you the way
Told you if you followed the steps and the rules you'd be doing okay
You checked all the boxes and sat in the pew grateful for somewhere to land
Never suspecting the treasure already living right there in your hand
Chorus
The welcome was warm till you stepped off the line
Till you questioned the way that it ran
Till you wouldn't submit to the unspoken rules
Or the quietly conditional plan
Then the warmth turned to chill and the favor grew thin
And the margins became your new home
You walked away from the steeple but not from the Lord
Though you wondered if you'd walk alone
Standing outside with the question still echoing
Does the Maker still know where I am
Does He see me out here in the cold
Verse 2
They built a religion of distance and fear
A God on a throne far away
Traded the mystery of Christ in you
For a system of perform and obey
Left the exhausted and broken behind
Treating the seekers like fools
Never once telling the wandering ones
That the Kingdom was never the rules
So you sit in the silence outside of the wall
Nursing the wound of the fall
Afraid that the Father is watching your failures
When He's not watching from outside at all
Bridge
Here is the secret they never quite told you
The one hiding in plain sight
The Father and Son and the Spirit within you
Were never outside in the night
You didn't lose God when you walked from the building
He walked right out with you then
The Life that was always already inside you
Was never confined to their pen
The ledger is ash and the courtroom is closed
You were never the outsider they said
Christ in you the hope of glory
Was alive in you all along instead
Verse 3
So if you've been sitting outside of the wall
Wondering if there is room
The room isn't somewhere you have to get back to
It's already breathing in you
John seventeen was His prayer for this moment
That they would finally see
That I am in them and they are in Me
And We are eternally free
No distance between you and the heart of the Father
No exile no ledger no score
You were never an outsider to Him
You were the one He was living inside of all along
You were always already home
Outro
You aren't an outsider to Him
The distance was never real
Christ within you
The Father around you
The Spirit between you
You are fully known
From the inside out
You always were
You always will be
