The temple's history dates back to the 15th century and is also associated with the history of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. The Kotte Sri Dalada Maha Perahera is an important religious and cultural procession that brings together Buddhist traditions, history and Sri Lankan cultural heritage. Traditional dancers, drummers, ceremonial elements and beautifully decorated elephants form an important part of this grand procession. Elephants have a particularly important place in Sri Lanka's Perahera traditions. Kotte Raja, in particular, is connected with the Kotte Perahera as its principal ceremonial tusker and is associated with carrying the sacred relic casket during the procession.
